What is a “SCAR”?

A scar on the Certificate of Origin is
what an artist or a gallery can have
issued for a dispute of payment for
a piece of art. It is officially called
a Simple Collection Action Request.
(SCAR)
If a piece of art has not been paid for
by the collector or gallery, a request
to issue a SCAR can certainly help
secure payment. The artist or gallery
can request a scar to be issued.
Typically a gallery will pay an artist
within an agreeable time or a collector
will settle the account with the gallery
in the as per agreed terms.
Rarely, a ‘late pay’ occurs. If a Certificate
of Origin has been secured for the artwork,
a simple ‘notice’ that a SCAR on the
Certificate has been applied for or issued
by Art Ownership.com, can generate a positive
response and can help clear up the matter.
The scar will be registered in our records
as needed for future reference.
Having this assurance does seem to expedite
the issue promptly if there are existing
COOs from the artist’s efforts,
especially if a SCAR could potentially sully
the reputation of the offending party for
mis-representing honest dealing.
All it takes to start the process is to fill out
the form and send it to us. If needed, we might
need some additional details about the
arrangement. Some simple email
communication between the parties will
help settle things. If a collector or gallery has
not been forthright with payment, just let us know.
We are glad to help out as no one wants to know
the prized artwork they now have has a ‘SCAR’
on the Certificate of Origin.
